Why Do We Change Engine Oil Every 3-5000 Miles?

Engine oil does not wear out after 3-5,000 miles – it can actually be used much longer. The problem is that conventional oil filters are not efficient at removing
particles below 25 microns in size. Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) studies have concluded that particles between 3-10 microns are most responsible for engine wear because they can get in between the moving parts in the engine, causing friction and abrasion. These particles also accelerate the breakdown of the oil. Over time, engine wear causes a loss of power and fuel efficiency as well as increased maintenance costs.

Conventional filters are only effective down to around 25 microns, allowing smaller particles to contaminate the oil and forcing the vehicle owner to change the oil and filter quite frequently. The same SAE studies conclude that improving filtration efficiency to capture particles in the 3-10 micron range allows longer use of the oil and promotes engine longevity and efficiency.

How the SOMS Filter Works

The SOMS Filter utilizes a unique, patented hybrid technology that complements a conventional pleated full-flow filter with an additional microfilter system. In a conventional filter, all of the engine oil passes through the full-flow filter and returns to the engine. In the SOMS Filter, a small amount of the oil in the
spin-on canister is diverted through the microfilter system, capturing particles down to 2 microns in size. The remainder of the oil goes through the conventional filter. The conventional filter and microfilter work together, ensuring that both large and small particles are removed from the oil. The technology enables much higher efficiency without affecting oil pressure and ensures proper lubrication of the engine. This SOMS Filter keeps the oil much cleaner than a conventional filter and enables extended use of the oil.

The SOMS Filter has no affect on engine oil pressure or oil flow. The combination of patented technologies and advanced materials enables full-flow filtration while processing a small amount of oil through the microfilter at any given moment. After driving as few as 40 miles there is a significant reduction in the number of damaging small particles.
